CJ has over 1,500 customers, each of which has anywhere from one to thousands of products available. What is Text Link Ads?

Text Link Ads, or TLA, is an advertising program,that were previously reviewed here. Instead of offering contextual links, TLA provides advertisers the opportunity to purchase links directly on publisher’s websites at a flat monthly fee. In turn, the publisher earns 50% of what each advertiser pays for a link. The below screen shot is an example from the TLA website that demonstrates how the links could appear on a blog.

What are the benefits of using TLA?

TLA is not like many of the other advertising opportunities. Its unique structure makes it an excellent compliment to other advertising methods already in place on your website.

In addition to the homepage and site-level advertising opportunity, TLA recently unveiled a post-level advertising option. This enables publishers to monetize individual posts. Post-level links cost advertisers less than site-level links, thus earning publishers less per link, but they present an additional means of monetization that would otherwise be unavailable.

Finally, TLA offers Feedvertising, which enabled publishers to append advertising to their RSS feeds. The opportunity is similar to the FeedBurner Ad Network (FAN); however, it is much less restrictive as blogs are not required to have the same level as popularity to join the TLA program as is required for joining FAN.

AuctionAds is an affiliate opportunity whereby eBay auctions are displayed in an advertisement-like format in a specified location of your website. They appear as banners and are available in various formats whose dimensions are similar to those of Google adsense and YPN Adds,See Auction Adds sample.

What are the benefits of using AuctionAds?

While appearing like various other advertising and affiliate banners, AuctionAds are fairly unique. Typically, ads that intended to drive sales have a set price, which is displayed in the ad. AuctionAds, on the other hand, displays the current bid since it is essentially one giant affiliate for eBay, the well known auction site. As such, the prices displayed are much more often going to be relatively low, encouraging a higher CTR than comparable affiliate systems.

Publishers utilizing AuctionAds on their site will receive 100% of the commission revenue earned from eBay. The commission is paid on a scale, which is changing for the better as of June 1, 2007. Below is a screen shot of the new commission scale.

For comparison, below is the old commission scale, which is still being utilized until June 1st.

You may be skeptical about the validity of the program considering and wondering how AuctionAds makes a profit if they are giving away 100% of what you earn according to eBay’s commission scale. The idea is rather ingenious in its simplicity.

If, for example, AuctionAds has 50 members generating $20 in revenue, then each member is receiving a 40% share, or $8 each. This means that for these 50 members, AuctionAds is paying $400.

However, AuctionAds is receiving more than $400 from eBay. Since they are one big affiliate, this means they generated $1,000 in revenue (50 members * $20/member) for eBay. This puts them higher on the payout scale, meaning they receive 52.5%, or $525, of the revenue earned. After paying $400 to their members, AuctionAds still pockets $125 for doing nothing more than accepting members into their program.

$125 is not much for one month, but this example only included 20 people. Imagine even 200 websites generating this revenue for eBay, and AuctionAds makes $1250/month. If 2000 websites do the same, that’s $12,500/month that AuctionAds earns.

Are there any drawbacks from using AuctionAds?

The primary drawback to AuctionAds is the same as any other advertising banner placed on a web page. It takes up space and may interrupt the flow of a website if not placed well.

Also a concern is the potential of an inappropriate image appearing in the banner. When testing the system in setting up a banner layout, I came across an image of a naked butt appearing as the item’s image in the preview section. I imagine that this is not too common, but it did remind me that anyone can place a product on eBay. With this in mind, the product images and descriptions may be a bit more outlandish or unexpected than alternative affiliate programs whose products are set up by professionals.

So how do I get started?

Getting started is easy. Simply go to the AuctionAds website, and sign up. The only information required is your account information (email address, password, and website URL) and your payment information (name and address).

Once your account is created, it is simply a matter of setting up your banner and installing it on your website. The banner setup process is rather simplistic: simply provide keywords relating to items you wish to include and the colors you want to utilize in your banner. If desired, each banner can be associated with a campaign for reporting purposes in order to determine how well each banner is working. AuctionAds provides a preview of your banner along with the JavaScript code required to place the banner on your website. That’s it!

How do I track my earnings?

Tracking earnings is done easily through AuctionAds’ reporting interface. After logging into their website, simply click on the “Report” link. Specify a specific date or date range as well as which campaigns to filter, click “Show Stats”. In addition to displaying a table of your impressions, clicks, CTR, and revenue, AuctionAds provides a graph of your impressions and revenue over time. (Note that my stats on the right are almost all zeros because I haven’t implemented it on my site since signing up.)

What are the benefits of using Amazon Associates?

Amazon.com has a wide variety of products, ranging from books and CD’s to clothing and computers. Because of the many options available, publishers of widely varying niches are able to find relevant products for linking to as an affiliate.

Furthermore, Amazon.com is well-known and well-established. Most Internet users have at least heard of the company even if they have not previously completed a purchase through Amazon’s website. As such, there is more of a tendency to entrust one’s business with the company.

Are there any drawbacks from using Amazon Associates?

Because Amazon.com offers very competitive pricing on their products, the revenue percentages offered from their affiliate program are somewhat low. For their Classic Plan, a flat 4% commission is paid to affiliates. For their Performance Plan, 4-8.5% is earned per sale depending upon the volume of shipped items for the month. Below is the specific details about the Performance Plan payout scale.

Additionally, Amazon Associates does not pay referral fees on auctions or zShops items as well as items linked on external sites such as Shutterfly.com.

After joining Amazon Associates, it’s very easy to get started with the many affiliate opportunities available. Amazon Associates Central provides a simple interface for generating individual product links, context links, omakase links, recommended product links, banner and text links, and product search box code.

Each of the link building tools that allows for linking to specific products provides a quick search feature for locating products that you wish to offer as an affiliate. After finding the products you’re looking for, the tool will provide the HTML code that needs to be pasted into your website.

If you are blogging via WordPress, there is a very easy-to-use plug-in entitled WP-Amazon that even further simplifies the link-building process, condensing everything needed into the WordPress dashboard. It is definitely worth installing if you often intend to publish content with Amazon affiliate links included.

Amazon Associates includes a very detailed group of reports for tracking earnings, click-through rates, and information regarding specific products purchased completed through affiliate links. Specifically, there is an earnings report, orders report, miscellaneous referrals report, link-type report, daily trends report, and tracking ID summary report accessible through the website. Each report can be displayed for specific date ranges as well.

Affiliates receive payments approximately 60 days following the end of the month. Payments are made via check, direct deposit into your bank account, or by Amazon.com gift certificate. A great feature of AdSense is that it allows for multiple ads to be display on-site, each of which can have a specific size and color scheme. This will allow for multiple opportunities to generate earnings throughout a site or individual page. Clicks can even be tracked to ad channels (a grouping method for classifying ads) in order to determine how effective specific ads are.

PayPerPost is the first popular program to offer compensation for posting specific content within a blog entry. Advertisers list opportunities they have available at a certain price with specific information required such as links and anchor text, minimum word count, and content type (e.g.: “positive only” or “buzz”). Publishers are able to accept these opportunities as long as their blogs meet certain criteria provided by the advertiser, including Alexa and Technorati rank, PageRank, and meeting blog category requirements.

What are the benefits of using PayPerPost?

Because PayPerPost was the first of this type of service, it gained popularity and is well known to advertisers. As such, it often has more opportunities available to publishers than its competitors.

Additionally, there are often opportunities available that are suitable various niches, meaning that the advertisement opportunities often result in content that is relevant to a publisher’s blog. Publishers don’t have to worry about veering off course from their blog’s focus by being selective in accepting opportunities.

PayPerPost also recently implemented a feature entitled PayPerPost Direct. PPP Direct reverses the responsibilities of publishers and advertisers in that advertisers can specifically request a publisher to perform a request at a minimum price specified by the publisher as opposed to the publisher finding advertising opportunities. Publishers can reject PPP Direct opportunities if they find the topic, request price, or anything else unacceptable.

Are there any drawbacks from using PayPerPost?

One of the drawbacks of PayPerPost is that after a post has been completed and reviewed, it must remain on the site for 30 days prior to receiving payment. The fact that it must remain on site for 30 days is not the drawback so much as the pending payment that will not be provided until that period is up.

Another drawback is that PPP Direct currently does not have a marketplace available for advertisers to find publishers. It is up to the advertiser to stumble upon a publisher’s site, whereby they can click on the “Hire Me” badge to request a sponsored post. As such, there is no major benefit of using PPP Direct over direct advertising, despite the fact that PayPerPost does take 10% of the earnings from the publisher. There is, however, speculation that PayPerPost is working on providing a marketplace, so it may simply become a matter of time before this becomes available.

So how do I get started?

After joining PayPerPost, you first need to set up your blog details. This includes specifying your blog’s name, URL, and description, selecting categories for your blog, providing tags that your blog relates to, and installing some tracking code into the footer of your blog. It sounds like a lot, but the only part that might prove to be difficult or time consuming is the tracking code installation.

Once everything is set up, finding review opportunities is a breeze. Clicking the “Open Opportunities” tab will list all opportunities. By default, all opportunities are listed whether or not you are eligible to accept them. Clicking the “Qualified Opportunities” link within the opportunities page will filter only those opportunities for which your blog meets the minimum requirements.

Clicking an opportunity will display details on it. In addition to displaying its name and category, the opportunity details screen includes the specific details that are required for a post to be accepted for the opportunity.

After an opportunity is accepted and the blog post is completed, it’s important to return to PayPerPost in order to provide the URL of the completed blog post. Without doing so, credit will not be given, and no payment will be received.

Earnings are displayed on the blogger dashboard after logging into PayPerPost. Included is the number of posts taken, number of posts approved or rejected, and how much you have been and will be paid.

In order to determine when payments will be received for the dollar figure under “Will Be Paid”, it’s necessary to click on the “My Posts” tab within the PayPerPost website. This page displays a table of all posts completed. Two of the columns specify the number of days until payment and payment date if a payment was already provided. This data can be used to determine when to anticipate the next payment.

There are many popular blogs on the Web today, but many of them are not taking advantage of the many opportunities available for monetization. As such, I would like to provide a series over the next couple weeks where I’ll go into the details of each of the more popular options used in today’s top blogs.

Before jumping in, here is a breakdown of the different money-makers I intend to cover.

Advertising Programs (CPC/CPM)

Google AdSense is a contextual advertising service. It offers advertisers the opportunity to receive inexpensive traffic, (which is done through Googleâ€™s AdWords service), and publishers the chance to make money by displaying on-site advertisements created by the advertisers.

Yahoo! Publisher Network, or YPN, is a contextual advertising method that mimics AdSense. It offers advertisers the opportunity to receive inexpensive traffic, (which is done through Yahooâ€™s Search Marketing service), and publishers the chance to make money by displaying these advertisements on-site.

Kontera ContentLink is another contextual advertising service. Unlike AdSense and YPN, ContentLink highlights various keywords on your page to make it appear like a link. When the reader hovers over one of these link, an in-page pop-up will appear containing the advertisement.

Text Link Ads provides advertisers the opportunity to purchase links directly on publisherâ€™s websites at a flat monthly fee. The cost for a link depends on site popularity, link position, and number of links being sold.

Affiliate Programs (CPA)

Amazon Associates provides publishers the opportunity to display affiliate links and details for Amazon.com products in a variety of formats, including product images, text links, and banners.

AuctionAds is an affiliate opportunity whereby eBay auctions are displayed in an advertisement-like format on your website. AuctionAds appear as banners and are available in several formats similar to those of AdSense and YPN ads.

ClickBank is a popular affiliate marketing program for publishers and affiliates alike. Almost all of the products found on ClickBank are electronic, with a large majority of the products being e-books.

Commission Junction, or CJ, is one of the largest affiliate marketing networks online. CJ serves over 1,500 customers, including eBay, Buy.com, and Yahoo! Unlike ClickBank, the majority of products offered through CJ are tangible.

Sponsored Post Programs

PayPerPost is the first popular program to offer compensation for posting specific blog content. Advertisers list available opportunities at a flat price with specific posting requirements, which publishers can then accept. PayPerPost Direct allows advertisers to find bloggers directly as well.

ReviewMe, like PayPerPost, offers the opportunity to earn money through sponsored blog posts. ReviewMe is mostly known for allowing advertisers to find bloggers, but there is a marketplace for publishers to find flat-rate blogging opportunities as well.

Sponsored Reviews (not yet reviewed) allows advertisers to list opportunities within a price range that publishers can bid within. Advertisers can counter-offer, allowing for haggling between both parties. Like PayPerPost and ReviewMe, advertisers can contact publishers directly as well.

BloggerWave (not yet reviewed) is one of the most recent sponsored post programs. While offering the same type of service as the above programs, the opportunities available on the site may differ depending on the user base.

Yahoo Publisher Network

What is Yahoo! Publisher Network?

Yahoo! Publisher Network, or YPN, is a contextual advertising method that mimics Google AdSense. Like AdSense, it offers advertisers the opportunity to receive inexpensive traffic, (which is done through Yahoo’s Search Marketing service), and publishers the chance to make money by displaying on-site advertisements created by the advertisers.

Ad units are available in a variety of sizes to accommodate for differing website structures, and publishers have the option of displaying either text or graphic links. An example of one of the YPN ad formats can be seen below.

What are the benefits of using YPN?

YPN, like AdSense, allows for multiple ads to be display on-site, each of which can have a specific size and color scheme. This allows for multiple opportunities to generate earnings throughout a site or individual page. Clicks can even be tracked to reporting categories (a grouping method for classifying ads) in order to determine how effective specific ads are.

Another reason for using YPN is due to its ease of installation. The setup process and code generation requires minimal input, part of which includes specifying custom colorization such that it will blend well with the design of your site. When customization is completed, a simple JavaScript code snippet is provided that can be pasted into your website where desired.

In addition to their standard in-page ads, YPN offers a means by which to include ads from their network into your RSS feed. As with their standard ads, this can be inserted easily with custom code that the service provides.

Compared with AdSense, YPN offers higher average earnings for publishers. Many who have previously used AdSense found themselves switching to YPN after initially trying it because they were simply earning much, much more. While it is questionable as to whether these statistics will remain as high as they currently are, it’s definitely worth cashing in on now if accepted into the program.

Are there any drawbacks from using YPN?

Because YPN is providing publishers higher PCP than AdSense is offering, it means that either: Google is taking a larger percentage of advertiser costs from AdSense; or Yahoo! is requiring advertisers to spend more than Google requires, potentially diverting some advertisers away from YPN.

If the latter case is true, it may cause difficulties in always having ads available for publishers displaying ad units. However, this may simply be resolved through YPN’s stricter requirements for accepting publishers into the program.

So how do I get started?

As a publisher, YPN is easy to apply for and simple to install. However, it is a bit more restrictive than the AdSense program, meaning that there is a lesser chance of being accepted into YPN for younger websites.

Once you are accepted into the YPN program, creating your first ad is a simple feat. The first step is selecting your desired ad layout with regards to size and colors. Colors can be customized, as in the screen shot on the right. This step also allows you to specify a reporting category for your ad, which can help with tracking specific ad stats later. After your ad is set up the way you like, simple copy the custom JavaScript code provided by Yahoo!, and paste it into your website.

How do I track my earnings?

The YPN reporting interface offers a great amount of detail. Those who are familiar with the reporting data provided by AdSense will have no trouble becoming acquainted with those provided by YPN. Data can be sorted by date and reporting category. Each date’s set of data includes total number of impressions, number of clicks, CTR, CPM, and revenue. For those interested in just a basic overview, YPN also provides your daily earnings alone when logging into the website.
