Originally, ReviewMe simply offered publishers the opportunity to register their websites whereby advertisers could locate suitable bloggers to write sponsored content. ReviewMe has since expanded to include a marketplace similar to PayPerPost’s core competency such that advertisers can post opportunities for bloggers to accept on a first-come, first-served basis.

What are the benefits of using ReviewMe?

ReviewMe offers advertisers the chance to find publishers that was previously unavailable. Although new competition has entered the field, ReviewMe remains strong because it was the first to offer advertisers the chance to find publishers for sponsored reviews with ease.

Because many bloggers — particularly newer bloggers — may have difficulty gauging the price to request for completing reviews, ReviewMe assists by providing a default asking price based upon statistical data including Alexa rank, Technorati rank, and estimated number of RSS subscribers. The requesting price can be modified within a range near to the default asking price assigned by ReviewMe.

Are there any drawbacks from using ReviewMe?

The biggest drawback to using ReviewMe is that they take a large percentages of earnings — 50% to be exact. If a publisher is offering reviews for $100, ReviewMe immediately pockets $50 as a cost of utilizing their service.

Additionally, a publisher whose blog does not have at least medium-strength statistics (Technorati, Alexa, etc.) will find that there is little to no demand from advertisers to complete a review for their product or service. This leaves the publisher to the marketplace until their blog’s stats improve.

Publishers who are planning to accept advertising opportunities within the marketplace will often find that the marketplace is empty. Advertising opportunities are often fully allocated shortly after being posted within ReviewMe’s marketplace, making it difficult for publishers using this approach.

So how do I get started?

Signing up for ReviewMe is a simple process. The first step is to create a new account by providing personal information such as name, address, SSN (if a US citizen), login credentials, and a PayPal email address. After registration is complete, you’ll need to login and provide your blog’s details so that advertisers can find you through ReviewMe. Details include blog name, URL, feed URL, description, category, and tags.

The next step is to make sure advertisers who visit your site are aware that you are offering paid reviews via ReviewMe. Navigate to the “Affiliate” tab, then click the “Affiliates” link. Clicking on the “Get HTML” button will provide the badge — a link and image, as seen on the right — that can be inserted into your blog for advertisers who come across your blog without the aide of ReviewMe. This badge will direct potential advertisers to a page where they can hire you to post a sponsored review.

For publishers who are interested in finding advertising opportunities through the marketplace, it’s as simple as clicking on the “View Campaigns” link under the “Publisher” tab. If any campaigns are available, information for each opportunity will be displayed such as its name, description, relevant categories, and payout. It’s important to note that ReviewMe has already accounted for their 50% fee from the marketplace listings, meaning that the dollar figure listed here is what a publisher will actually receive upon completing an accepted review.

To accept one of the marketplace reviews, simply click the “View” link to display the details regarding the opportunity, then click the accept button. ReviewMe will provide a due date by which the review must be completed. It is very important that upon completing a review, the publisher must return to ReviewMe to submit the URL of the review in order to receive credit and payment when the review is accepted.

How do I track my earnings?

ReviewMe makes fairly simple to view earnings for completed reviews as well as past payments received. Withing the “Publisher” tab, the “Manage My Reviews” link will provide a table of all reviews regardless of their status. Calculating unpaid earnings must be done manually by looking through the reviews that have a status of “Completed” that fall within the month being calculated.

Viewing past payments that have been received is a much simpler task. Click on the “View Payments” link within the same tab will provide an easy-to-use search mechanism for finding payments falling within a specified date range.

Commission Junction

Commission Junction, or CJ, is one of the largest affiliate marketing networks online, operating worldwide as a middleman between publishers and advertisers.
What are the benefits of using Commission Junction?

The most significant benefit of utilizing Commission Junction is the seemingly endless variety of products available for publishers to receive commission. CJ has over 1,500 customers, each of which has anywhere from one to thousands of products available. The products offered all seem to be of relatively good quality, meaning publishers won’t have added difficulty finding worthwhile products or making a sale.

Are there any drawbacks from using Commission Junction?

One drawback of using Commission Junction is that the CJ Account Center is a bit difficult for a new user. It can take some time to get a handle on where to find products, links, and the appropriate reports.

Another drawback relates to the time required before being eligible to market a product on CJ. After being accepted to the program, each company must also accept a publisher into their individual program before he or she can market their products.

So how do I get started?

After completing the Commission Junction publisher application form and being accepted into the program, you’re one step closer to offering products as an affiliate. Logging into the CJ Account Manager and clicking on the “Get Links” tab lists the many categories and popular sub-categories of companies available to CJ publishers, such as Business > Marketing, Games & Toys > Electronic Games, and Books/Media > Audio Books. Clicking on one of these links will display the list of companies offering programs through CJ, as per the below screen shot.

After locating businesses with products for which you are interested in becoming an affiliate, the next step is to apply to each individual program. Applications may take several days to complete prior to being accepted. Once accepted, you will be eligible to receive credit for affiliate sales.

In order to offer products, providing product and service links and images is necessary for making a sale. The CJ Account Manager offers an easy-to-use tool for retrieving these links. Once again, it’s necessary to locate the store for which you wish to offer products. This can be done using the steps mentioned above, or — once accepted into a program — by scrolling down the the “My Advertisers” section of the Publisher Home screen after logging in. Links are available in a variety of forms, such as text links, banner ads, and contextual ads, but specific offerings are dependent upon each program.

How do I track my earnings?

Commission Junction’s reporting interface is very refined. Included are performance reports and transaction reports.

The performance reports provide a means by which to track commissions earned, sale amounts generated, total clicks, and click-through rates. The data can be filtered by date as well as specific criteria such as link ID and advertiser. Reporting top advertisers by commission earned is also available.

The transaction report is available for tracking information relating to balance and pending commissions. Similar to the performance report, there is a large number of filtering options such as filtering by date, advertiser, or transaction type.

New publishers should note that there is a minimum payout of $25 US (varying by country). Payments are made on the 20th of every month only if the account’s balance was above the minimum at the end of the prior month.

Click Bank

ClickBank has become a very popular marketing program for publishers and affiliates alike. Because most of the products found on ClickBank are electronic (such as e-books), the commission rates are often as high as 50-75%! This is very exciting as an affiliate marketer, which truly drives the promotion and sales through this site.

What are the benefits of using ClickBank?

Because a large proportion of ClickBank’s products offered for affiliates in their marketplace tend to be electronic, and because e-books and similar electronic products are simpler to produce than physical goods, there are often new products available for promotion. This means there are always new opportunities for additional revenue.

Additionally, ClickBank is very popular due to its high commission rates, often between 50-75%. The reason that the rates are often so high is due to the lack of costs required in producing electronic products compared to physical goods.

Finally, just about anyone is accepted into the ClickBank affiliate program.

Are there any drawbacks from using ClickBank?

Because the commission rates offered by ClickBank are very high for so many products, the competition can be fierce. Marketing a product for successful sales can end up being costly if you are attempting to advertise with AdWords or a similar service and are not fully acquainted with minimizing costs while maximizing CTR.

Numerous affiliates have also encountered issues with receiving credit for sales that are completed as a result of their marketing efforts via affiliate links. Problems can be encountered where the tracking cookie is somehow deleted or modified between a user clicking the affiliate link and reaching the checkout page. This can occur with poor (or flat-out thievery style of) scripting on a publisher’s page, or through malware that modifies tracking cookies prior to completing a purchase on an end-user’s system.

Finally, another slight annoyance is that ClickBank provides a password during the registration process that it does not allow you to change. This may make it difficult for you to log in, and could potentially pose as a security concern since it simply creates a need to write down the assigned password in order to remember it.

So how do I get started?

Once you have joined ClickBank, visit the ClickBank Marketplace to find the products offered for affiliate marketers. Products are listed in categories and sub-categories, and a search form is also provided for locating products relevant to your niche.

After narrowing down your search, a list of products are provided with links to view the publisher’s pitch page and to create a “hoplink”. The hoplink is what will allow you to create a custom affiliate link using your ClickBank username and an optional tracking code for reporting, as per the screen shot below.

How do I track my earnings?

ClickBank provides a basic reporting interface for tracking earnings. By specifying a date range, the transactions report will provide specifics regarding each sale made through your affiliate link, including date and time, the tracking ID if used, the item sold, the amount earned, and the name and email of the customer.

ClickBank has a minimum payment threshold of $10 before a payment is made to an affiliate, and payments are made by check. Additionally, transactions from 5 separate credit cards must be made for an affiliate prior to releasing any payments. (PayPal and e-check purchases made by customers do not count toward the minimum.) The reason for this is that it helps to prevent abuse of the program by customers simply attempting to receive discounts on products.

What"s is Text Link Adds

What is Text Link Ads?

Text Link Ads, or TLA, is an advertising program, that were previously reviewed here. Instead of offering contextual links, TLA provides advertisers the opportunity to purchase links directly on publisher’s websites at a flat monthly fee. In turn, the publisher earns 50% of what each advertiser pays for a link. The below screen shot is an example from the TLA website that demonstrates how the links could appear on a blog.

What are the benefits of using TLA?

TLA is not like many of the other advertising opportunities. Its unique structure makes it an excellent compliment to other advertising methods already in place on your website.

In addition to the homepage and site-level advertising opportunity, TLA recently unveiled a post-level advertising option. This enables publishers to monetize individual posts. Post-level links cost advertisers less than site-level links, thus earning publishers less per link, but they present an additional means of monetization that would otherwise be unavailable.

Finally, TLA offers Feedvertising, which enabled publishers to append advertising to their RSS feeds. The opportunity is similar to the FeedBurner Ad Network (FAN); however, it is much less restrictive as blogs are not required to have the same level as popularity to join the TLA program as is required for joining FAN.

Are there any drawbacks from using TLA?

The primary drawback of using TLA is that you’re losing out on 50% of what advertisers pay for a link, as it instantly goes to the service never to be seen by the publisher. While this is a significant loss of potential earnings, many users consider it worthwhile, as without TLA they wouldn’t have that source of revenue in the first place.

This significant loss of income has encouraged plug-ins to work around the need for TLA, the most recent of which is WP Text Ads for WordPress. While this does resolve the issue of not giving up a large chunk of potential income, it does make it much more difficult for advertisers to find your blog since TLA also provides a means by which advertisers can locate blogs that meet the criteria they’re seeking.

So how do I get started?

As a publisher, simply define your preferred number of links to be sold and where on the page the links will be displayed. It is also necessary to specify whether links being sold will be displayed site-wide or only on the homepage. Depending on the configuration of each of these settings in concordance with your website’s Blog Juice — a combined measurement of your Technorati rank, Alexa rank, Bloglines rank, and number of inbound links — your price per link will vary. In order to determine what this value will be, TLA offers a very handy Link Calculator tool, as can be seen in the screen shot below.

How do I track my earnings?

The TLA Account Home includes a “Money Earned” reporting interface that allows a publisher to see how much each approved blog has earned during the course of a month. Unlike other reporting interfaces, all earnings can’t be viewed by selecting a date range. Instead, one month at a time must be selected for analysis. Included in a month’s report is the breakdown of earnings from each of the three sources: Web, RSS, and individual posts. Reports can also be download as an Excel XLS or CSV file.

Auction Adds

AuctionAds is an affiliate opportunity whereby eBay auctions are displayed in an advertisement-like format in a specified location of your website. They appear as banners and are available in various formats whose dimensions are similar to those of Google adsense and YPN Adds,See Auction Adds sample.

What are the benefits of using AuctionAds?

While appearing like various other advertising and affiliate banners, AuctionAds are fairly unique. Typically, ads that intended to drive sales have a set price, which is displayed in the ad. AuctionAds, on the other hand, displays the current bid since it is essentially one giant affiliate for eBay, the well known auction site. As such, the prices displayed are much more often going to be relatively low, encouraging a higher CTR than comparable affiliate systems.

Publishers utilizing AuctionAds on their site will receive 100% of the commission revenue earned from eBay. The commission is paid on a scale, which is changing for the better as of June 1, 2007. Below is a screen shot of the new commission scale.

For comparison, below is the old commission scale, which is still being utilized until June 1st.

You may be skeptical about the validity of the program considering and wondering how AuctionAds makes a profit if they are giving away 100% of what you earn according to eBay’s commission scale. The idea is rather ingenious in its simplicity.

If, for example, AuctionAds has 50 members generating $20 in revenue, then each member is receiving a 40% share, or $8 each. This means that for these 50 members, AuctionAds is paying $400.

However, AuctionAds is receiving more than $400 from eBay. Since they are one big affiliate, this means they generated $1,000 in revenue (50 members * $20/member) for eBay. This puts them higher on the payout scale, meaning they receive 52.5%, or $525, of the revenue earned. After paying $400 to their members, AuctionAds still pockets $125 for doing nothing more than accepting members into their program.

$125 is not much for one month, but this example only included 20 people. Imagine even 200 websites generating this revenue for eBay, and AuctionAds makes $1250/month. If 2000 websites do the same, that’s $12,500/month that AuctionAds earns.

Are there any drawbacks from using AuctionAds?

The primary drawback to AuctionAds is the same as any other advertising banner placed on a web page. It takes up space and may interrupt the flow of a website if not placed well.

Also a concern is the potential of an inappropriate image appearing in the banner. When testing the system in setting up a banner layout, I came across an image of a naked butt appearing as the item’s image in the preview section. I imagine that this is not too common, but it did remind me that anyone can place a product on eBay. With this in mind, the product images and descriptions may be a bit more outlandish or unexpected than alternative affiliate programs whose products are set up by professionals.

So how do I get started?

Getting started is easy. Simply go to the AuctionAds website, and sign up. The only information required is your account information (email address, password, and website URL) and your payment information (name and address).

Once your account is created, it is simply a matter of setting up your banner and installing it on your website. The banner setup process is rather simplistic: simply provide keywords relating to items you wish to include and the colors you want to utilize in your banner. If desired, each banner can be associated with a campaign for reporting purposes in order to determine how well each banner is working. AuctionAds provides a preview of your banner along with the JavaScript code required to place the banner on your website. That’s it!

How do I track my earnings?

Tracking earnings is done easily through AuctionAds’ reporting interface. After logging into their website, simply click on the “Report” link. Specify a specific date or date range as well as which campaigns to filter, click “Show Stats”. In addition to displaying a table of your impressions, clicks, CTR, and revenue, AuctionAds provides a graph of your impressions and revenue over time. (Note that my stats on the right are almost all zeros because I haven’t implemented it on my site since signing up.)

AuctionAds pays its members monthly via PayPal. A member is required to have a minimum AuctionAds balance of $10 in order to receive payment.

Amazon Associates

Amazon Associates is an affiliate program that Amazon.com has offered for many years, dating back nearly to the company’s inception. The program provides publishers the opportunity to display details for Amazon.com products in many formats (product images, text links, banners, etc.) with special links used for tracking purchases and properly crediting affiliates.

What are the benefits of using Amazon Associates?

Amazon.com has a wide variety of products, ranging from books and CD’s to clothing and computers. Because of the many options available, publishers of widely varying niches are able to find relevant products for linking to as an affiliate.

Furthermore, Amazon.com is well-known and well-established. Most Internet users have at least heard of the company even if they have not previously completed a purchase through Amazon’s website. As such, there is more of a tendency to entrust one’s business with the company.

Are there any drawbacks from using Amazon Associates?

Because Amazon.com offers very competitive pricing on their products, the revenue percentages offered from their affiliate program are somewhat low. For their Classic Plan, a flat 4% commission is paid to affiliates. For their Performance Plan, 4-8.5% is earned per sale depending upon the volume of shipped items for the month. Below is the specific details about the Performance Plan payout scale.

Additionally, Amazon Associates does not pay referral fees on auctions or zShops items as well as items linked on external sites such as Shutterfly.com.

So how do I get started?

After joining Amazon Associates, it’s very easy to get started with the many affiliate opportunities available. Amazon Associates Central provides a simple interface for generating individual product links, context links, omakase links, recommended product links, banner and text links, and product search box code.

Each of the link building tools that allows for linking to specific products provides a quick search feature for locating products that you wish to offer as an affiliate. After finding the products you’re looking for, the tool will provide the HTML code that needs to be pasted into your website.

If you are blogging via WordPress, there is a very easy-to-use plug-in entitled WP-Amazon that even further simplifies the link-building process, condensing everything needed into the WordPress dashboard. It is definitely worth installing if you often intend to publish content with Amazon affiliate links included.

How do I track my earnings?

Amazon Associates includes a very detailed group of reports for tracking earnings, click-through rates, and information regarding specific products purchased completed through affiliate links. Specifically, there is an earnings report, orders report, miscellaneous referrals report, link-type report, daily trends report, and tracking ID summary report accessible through the website. Each report can be displayed for specific date ranges as well.

Affiliates receive payments approximately 60 days following the end of the month. Payments are made via check, direct deposit into your bank account, or by Amazon.com gift certificate. Payments are not made until the amount due is $100 for check payments or $15 for either alternative payment method. It is important to note that Amazon charges a hefty $15 for processing checks (unless outside the US where direct depositing is not an option), so it is to your benefit to utilize one of the other payment methods.

Google Adsense

Google AdSense is a contextual advertising service. It offers advertisers the opportunity to receive inexpensive traffic, (which is done through Google’s AdWords service), and publishers the chance to make money by displaying on-site advertisements created by the advertisers.

Ad units are available in a variety of sizes to accommodate for differing website structures, and publishers have the option of display only text links, only graphic links, or both depending on what ads the AdSense service has to offer at the time of the request.

What are the benefits of using AdSense?

AdSense is the most popular contextual advertising program on the Internet. Because of this, you can almost always expect ads to be available for display on your site so as to not miss a beat in making money.

A great feature of AdSense is that it allows for multiple ads to be display on-site, each of which can have a specific size and color scheme. This will allow for multiple opportunities to generate earnings throughout a site or individual page. Clicks can even be tracked to ad channels (a grouping method for classifying ads) in order to determine how effective specific ads are.

Another reason so many people utilize AdSense is because of how easy it is to install. The setup process and code generation requires minimal input, part of which includes specifying custom colorization such that it will blend well with the design of your site.

Are there any drawbacks from using AdSense?

One drawback to AdSense is that a minimum earnings of $50 is required before a payment will be made. For smaller websites receiving relatively little traffic, this can very well mean that it will take several months before getting a payment.

Considering that Google has had much time to optimize the manner in which ads are served in combination with the increasing competition through other contextual advertising services such as Yahoo! Publisher Network, AdSense may not have the best earning potential compared to what it once offered. As such, it may be ideal to rotate ads on your website between Google and one or more other advertising programs to see what best suits your needs.

So how do I get started?

As a publisher, AdSense is simple to apply for and install. While the AdSense program does not accept all sites (e.g. made for AdSense sites), it will accept most websites. Additionally, once you have been accepted into the AdSense program, you are able to place ads on all your websites without having to reapply for additional accounts. With this in mind, one way to almost ensure acceptance into the program is to create a Blogger account — which is now owned by Google — and sign up for AdSense through there.

Once you are accepted into the AdSense program, creating ads is a simple with the help of the AdSense for Content wizard. The first step is to select whether you would like to create an ad unit (a block of text links with descriptions or an image block) or a link unit (a block of just links).

The next step is to decide upon an ad format, which is essentially the dimensions for the ad unit, and the color scheme for this particular ad setup. Color schemes can be saved for conveniently creating additional ad units of varying formats within the same website at a later time.

How do I track my earnings?

Once everything is configured and installed onto your website, the obvious next step is to find out how much you’re earning. The AdSense website provides a handy overview screen when you first log in. By default, it displays today’s earnings along with a breakdown of where the most impressions and clicks are coming from for the ad blocks earning the most during that time frame.

For a more detailed look at where earnings are coming from, which ad channels have the highest click-through rates, etc., there is also an advanced reporting tool. This allows for breakdown by variations of website, channel, and date. Specific date ranges can be specified to a greater degree than can be done with the overview screen.

That’s pretty much everything you need to know to get started with AdSense. Once you get a feel for how to use the wizards and reporting tools, I highly recommend looking into optimizing your ad layouts and positioning in order to maximize your earnings.

Pay Per Post

What is PayPerPost?

PayPerPost is the first popular program to offer compensation for posting specific content within a blog entry. Advertisers list opportunities they have available at a certain price with specific information required such as links and anchor text, minimum word count, and content type (e.g.: “positive only” or “buzz”). Publishers are able to accept these opportunities as long as their blogs meet certain criteria provided by the advertiser, including Alexa and Technorati rank, PageRank, and meeting blog category requirements.

What are the benefits of using PayPerPost?

Because PayPerPost was the first of this type of service, it gained popularity and is well known to advertisers. As such, it often has more opportunities available to publishers than its competitors.

Additionally, there are often opportunities available that are suitable various niches, meaning that the advertisement opportunities often result in content that is relevant to a publisher’s blog. Publishers don’t have to worry about veering off course from their blog’s focus by being selective in accepting opportunities.

PayPerPost also recently implemented a feature entitled PayPerPost Direct. PPP Direct reverses the responsibilities of publishers and advertisers in that advertisers can specifically request a publisher to perform a request at a minimum price specified by the publisher as opposed to the publisher finding advertising opportunities. Publishers can reject PPP Direct opportunities if they find the topic, request price, or anything else unacceptable.

Are there any drawbacks from using PayPerPost?

One of the drawbacks of PayPerPost is that after a post has been completed and reviewed, it must remain on the site for 30 days prior to receiving payment. The fact that it must remain on site for 30 days is not the drawback so much as the pending payment that will not be provided until that period is up.

Another drawback is that PPP Direct currently does not have a marketplace available for advertisers to find publishers. It is up to the advertiser to stumble upon a publisher’s site, whereby they can click on the “Hire Me” badge to request a sponsored post. As such, there is no major benefit of using PPP Direct over direct advertising, despite the fact that PayPerPost does take 10% of the earnings from the publisher. There is, however, speculation that PayPerPost is working on providing a marketplace, so it may simply become a matter of time before this becomes available.

So how do I get started?

After joining PayPerPost, you first need to set up your blog details. This includes specifying your blog’s name, URL, and description, selecting categories for your blog, providing tags that your blog relates to, and installing some tracking code into the footer of your blog. It sounds like a lot, but the only part that might prove to be difficult or time consuming is the tracking code installation.

Once everything is set up, finding review opportunities is a breeze. Clicking the “Open Opportunities” tab will list all opportunities. By default, all opportunities are listed whether or not you are eligible to accept them. Clicking the “Qualified Opportunities” link within the opportunities page will filter only those opportunities for which your blog meets the minimum requirements.

Clicking an opportunity will display details on it. In addition to displaying its name and category, the opportunity details screen includes the specific details that are required for a post to be accepted for the opportunity.

After an opportunity is accepted and the blog post is completed, it’s important to return to PayPerPost in order to provide the URL of the completed blog post. Without doing so, credit will not be given, and no payment will be received.

How do I track my earnings?

Earnings are displayed on the blogger dashboard after logging into PayPerPost. Included is the number of posts taken, number of posts approved or rejected, and how much you have been and will be paid.

In order to determine when payments will be received for the dollar figure under “Will Be Paid”, it’s necessary to click on the “My Posts” tab within the PayPerPost website. This page displays a table of all posts completed. Two of the columns specify the number of days until payment and payment date if a payment was already provided. This data can be used to determine when to anticipate the next payment.

Make Money From Your Blog

There are many popular blogs on the Web today, but many of them are not taking advantage of the many opportunities available for monetization. Unlike ClickBank, the majority of products offered through CJ are tangible.

Sponsored Post Programs

PayPerPost is the first popular program to offer compensation for posting specific blog content. Advertisers list available opportunities at a flat price with specific posting requirements, which publishers can then accept. PayPerPost Direct allows advertisers to find bloggers directly as well.

ReviewMe, like PayPerPost, offers the opportunity to earn money through sponsored blog posts. ReviewMe is mostly known for allowing advertisers to find bloggers, but there is a marketplace for publishers to find flat-rate blogging opportunities as well.

Sponsored Reviews (not yet reviewed) allows advertisers to list opportunities within a price range that publishers can bid within. Advertisers can counter-offer, allowing for haggling between both parties. Like PayPerPost and ReviewMe, advertisers can contact publishers directly as well.

BloggerWave (not yet reviewed) is one of the most recent sponsored post programs. Publisher Network?

Yahoo! Publisher Network, or YPN, is a contextual advertising method that mimics Google AdSense. Like AdSense, it offers advertisers the opportunity to receive inexpensive traffic, (which is done through Yahoo’s Search Marketing service), and publishers the chance to make money by displaying on-site advertisements created by the advertisers.

Ad units are available in a variety of sizes to accommodate for differing website structures, and publishers have the option of displaying either text or graphic links. An example of one of the YPN ad formats can be seen below.

What are the benefits of using YPN?

YPN, like AdSense, allows for multiple ads to be display on-site, each of which can have a specific size and color scheme. This allows for multiple opportunities to generate earnings throughout a site or individual page. Clicks can even be tracked to reporting categories (a grouping method for classifying ads) in order to determine how effective specific ads are.

Another reason for using YPN is due to its ease of installation. The setup process and code generation requires minimal input, part of which includes specifying custom colorization such that it will blend well with the design of your site. When customization is completed, a simple JavaScript code snippet is provided that can be pasted into your website where desired.

In addition to their standard in-page ads, YPN offers a means by which to include ads from their network into your RSS feed. As with their standard ads, this can be inserted easily with custom code that the service provides.

Compared with AdSense, YPN offers higher average earnings for publishers. Many who have previously used AdSense found themselves switching to YPN after initially trying it because they were simply earning much, much more. While it is questionable as to whether these statistics will remain as high as they currently are, it’s definitely worth cashing in on now if accepted into the program.

Are there any drawbacks from using YPN?

Because YPN is providing publishers higher PCP than AdSense is offering, it means that either: Google is taking a larger percentage of advertiser costs from AdSense; or Yahoo! is requiring advertisers to spend more than Google requires, potentially diverting some advertisers away from YPN.

If the latter case is true, it may cause difficulties in always having ads available for publishers displaying ad units. However, this may simply be resolved through YPN’s stricter requirements for accepting publishers into the program.

So how do I get started?

As a publisher, YPN is easy to apply for and simple to install. However, it is a bit more restrictive than the AdSense program, meaning that there is a lesser chance of being accepted into YPN for younger websites.

Once you are accepted into the YPN program, creating your first ad is a simple feat. The first step is selecting your desired ad layout with regards to size and colors. Colors can be customized, as in the screen shot on the right. This step also allows you to specify a reporting category for your ad, which can help with tracking specific ad stats later. After your ad is set up the way you like, simple copy the custom JavaScript code provided by Yahoo!, and paste it into your website.

How do I track my earnings?

The YPN reporting interface offers a great amount of detail. Those who are familiar with the reporting data provided by AdSense will have no trouble becoming acquainted with those provided by YPN. Data can be sorted by date and reporting category. Each date’s set of data includes total number of impressions, number of clicks, CTR, CPM, and revenue. For those interested in just a basic overview, YPN also provides your daily earnings alone when logging into the website.
